General Summary: The Director of Operations leads the daily operation of multiple departments including manufacturing, manufacturing engineering, maintenance and supply chain to achieve maximum quality and cost effectiveness in an on-time and efficient manner.
While overseeing these activities, the Director of Operations is also accountable for the application of lean tools including value stream mapping, 6S, process mapping, flow methods (pull, kanban), SMED, standard work and visual management, etc. This position is essential in developing a culture of continuous improvement to meet and exceed operational goals and objectives. In this role, the Director is responsible for planning, controlling and coordinating the entire range of manufacturing activities within the Value Stream(s) including Safety, Quality, Delivery, Inventory and Productivity in support of budgetary and customer requirements.
Success in this role is defined by daily order execution, workforce flexibility, employee onboarding, productivity/efficiency, sequencing, process adherence, and training/development in production. This will be measured by ongoing improvements in driving quality, schedule attainment, Safety, and productivity/efficiency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Leads all facets of the value stream(s) management and supervision including workforce flexibility, staffing, employee onboarding and training/development, to include cross-training.
  2. Leads production execution capabilities for a large operation, potentially with more than one location, to accomplish business objectives through the coordinated efforts of multiple teams
  3. Establishes goals and objectives for the business units/departments.
  4. Develops a 3 year facility continuous improvement plan and executes/leads highly complex multi-year, multi-discipline, best practice strategic operational projects. Ensure the creation of current state and future state value stream maps in order to develop and manage a plan to arrive at the annual future states.
  5. Responsible leading and coordinating the successful launch of New Product Introductions (NPI) within operations
  6. Ensures ongoing success of process improvement initiatives by implementing policies, procedures and process documentation.
  7. Identify and reduce value stream waste, improve quality, productivity and reduce lead times in a culture of continuous improvement.
  8. Deploys demand driven principals and strategies that supports operational excellence and long range plans. (Flexibility, Speed & Responsiveness)
  9. Ensures product, material and information streams flow and are synchronized to produce maximum efficiencies and lowest cost of operation.
  10. Works closely with Planning, Purchasing and Materials Management and their teams to achieve SMART goals and KPI's.
  11. Develops and challenges resources to improve performance through systems utilization and process improvements.
  12. Use and promote a disciplined problem solving methodology (5-why, 8D) to drive countermeasures and ensure long term sustainable results
  13. Coaches and mentors his/her production team to improve engagement with local technical/commercial stakeholders and to establish communication channels between the cross functional teams.
  14. Ensures a safe work place is provided for all employees. Implements and executes frequent department safety inspections and assures the accurate completion of all accident reports.
  15. Has a solid understanding of the broad business. Evaluates situations objectively and demonstrates the ability to make decisions that are intended to have a positive impact on work performance or area and the total business.
  16. Reviews the daily and weekly shipping schedules and production capabilities to determine how to employ people, equipment and tooling to execute sequence and expedite daily orders.
  17. Builds future leaders in Production Management and other operational disciplines.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Manage operations Value Stream Managers and Supervisors. Other direct reports include Director Manufacturing Services and the Director of Supply Chain and their organizations.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Experience: Engineering, or Industrial Technology
  • Strong Lean background; Experience with Value Stream Mapping is a must
  • Experience leading a major cross-functional project that included managing resources, implementing project plans and timelines, identifying and removing roadblocks, implementation of improved product lines.
  • Expert in implementation of lean principles and improvements; preferably demand flow principles
  • Strong project leadership experience with a diversity of team skills.
  • ERP/MRP Experience: Syteline, SAP, Oracle or JD Edwards.
  • Demand Driven Fulfillment Principles.
  • Strong Problem Solving Skills.
  • Strong Coaching/Mentoring.

Education and Experience: Requires a four-year degree in Engineering, Business, or Business Operations with a minimum of 5-10 years leading or supervising lean manufacturing activities within a manufacturing organization. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a union environment and/ or an advance degree, MS and/or MBA preferred
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: CPIM and Lean Six Sigma desirable.
