Everyone is asking the wrong first question about AI.

Most conversations start with:

“How should we use AI?”

It’s a reasonable question, but I think it comes too soon.

The first question should not be how.

It should be why.

Purpose has to come before technology. Without a clear business purpose, AI does not automatically create clarity, alignment, or better outcomes. It creates speed.

And speed without direction can be dangerous.

If an organization’s priorities are misaligned, AI may simply help it move further away from its objectives faster. But when priorities are clear and leadership is aligned, AI can become one of the most powerful business accelerators we have ever seen.

That is why I believe AI is not primarily a technology challenge.

It is a leadership challenge.

The pressure to adopt AI is real. Executive teams are being asked to move quickly, experiment boldly, and find new ways to improve productivity, efficiency, and innovation. But speed cannot come at the expense of strategy.

Before approving the next AI initiative, leaders should be able to answer one simple question:

What business purpose will this serve that we cannot clearly accomplish today?

If the answer is not obvious, the conversation probably should not start with AI. It should start with the business objective, the operational challenge, or the outcome the organization is trying to achieve.

The companies that create lasting advantage will not be the ones that simply adopt the most AI tools. They will be the ones with the clearest sense of purpose, the strongest alignment across leadership, and the discipline to ensure every AI investment advances a meaningful business goal.
