Executive Insights: AI Is Reshaping the Role of the Technology Professional

By: Frank Waite, President

AI is changing how work gets done and there is no shortage of conversation about whether those changes will replace or elevate the people delivering the work. From what we’re seeing in the market, these early changes are not replacing people; the changes are positively impacting where people spend their time and how they create measurable value.

For years, highly skilled professionals have spent a significant portion of their time performing hands-on, task-oriented work. They write code, analyze data, prepare documentation, test solutions, build reports, and manage processes.

Those responsibilities are not disappearing overnight. But as AI becomes more capable, the balance of the work from tactical to strategic is continuing to shift.

AI can now handle or accelerate a growing number of tasks that used to consume hours of someone’s day. This has freed people up to focus on work where experience, judgment and decision-making are the most impactful. It has also shifted the focus of the IT professional from simply building the solution to ensuring they’re delivering the right solution. Truly a transition from builder to architect.

The architect does more than complete assigned tasks; they must understand the business objectives, identify the obstacles standing in the way, and design the right path forward. They must consider how people, processes, data, and technology work together to create a sustainable result.

Technical skills still matter, but they are no longer enough on their own. It requires curiosity, business acumen, critical thinking, communication, and judgment.

We are already seeing this across our Professional Services engagements. Developers are spending less time on routine coding and more time thinking through architecture, integration, and business impact. Data professionals are moving beyond producing reports to helping leaders make actionable decisions based on what the data is telling them. Project teams are not just documenting requirements—they are asking whether those requirements solve the right problems in the first place.

People do not become less important; their contributions actually become more impactful as roles shift to more strategic activities.

This shift also changes what clients expect from their technology partners. Value can no longer be measured by how much work gets done or by how many tasks are completed. Clients expect their partners to understand their business objectives, remove obstacles, accelerate outcomes, and build solutions that create measurable value.

AI can increase the speed of delivery, but speed only matters if you are delivering the right solution.

The real objective is better delivery: faster, more efficient and more closely aligned to the business.

That means applying AI with proper oversight, aligning it with the business goals, and ensuring the resulting solutions are practical, scalable, and responsible. It also means keeping experienced professionals at the center of the work providing direction, validating decisions, and adjusting strategy as business needs evolve.

For leaders, the opportunity is not simply to add AI to existing roles, but to rethink and reposition those roles around the work that people are uniquely qualified to deliver:

  • Which activities can AI accelerate?
  • Where is human judgment essential?
  • How can teams spend more time solving business problems and less time managing repetitive tasks?

This paradigm shift is also shaping how we approach delivery at INSPYR Solutions. Through our patent pending technology, INSPYR Velocity, we leverage AI to accelerate work while aligning our experienced professionals to roles focused on decision-making, direction, course correction and business outcomes. AI makes the team faster and more efficient, but the experience and skill of the team is what makes the results more valuable.

AI will continue to change the mechanics of delivery. As leaders, our responsibility is to ensure it also elevates the teams behind it and delivers better outcomes to our clients.

I do not believe AI’s role in the future of work removes people from the equation. It will continue to empower talented people to think bigger, design better, and solve the business challenges that matter most.
