Optical-Mechanical Design Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Opto-Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design and development of key optical-mechanical modules for space-based systems. The engineer will work on high-performance optical, electrical, and mechatronic assemblies, supporting the full product life cycle from conceptual design through prototype, flight, and production readiness.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize, design, and develop free-space optical laser communication systems.

  • Optimize opto-mechanical layouts and design optical mounts for performance and manufacturability.

  • Prototype designs for laboratory testing and create production drawings for flight hardware.

  • Serve as the primary technical interface to the development team, participating in design reviews, technical escalations, and new product development activities.

  • Support operations by providing technical solutions during quality escalations and production challenges.

  • Lead capacity improvement efforts, including defining equipment requirements and assisting with procurement, installation, and qualification of production-enabling systems.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 5+ years of experience as an opto-mechanical design engineer.

  • Demonstrated experience in at least one of the following areas:

    • Space systems

    • Free-space optical systems

    • Precision mechanisms

  • Hands-on experience with electronics packaging, new product introduction, and design for manufacturability.

  • Proficiency in CAD (5+ years), including NX / TeamCenter (1+ year).

  • Experience with technical drawings and GD&T standards.

  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency required under export control regulations.

Preferred:

  • 10+ years of experience as an opto-mechanical design engineer.

  • Experience designing laser optical communication systems for space applications.

  • Experience with precision space mechanisms.

  • Experience building optical systems in laboratory or Class 100K clean room environments.

  • Knowledge of composites and athermalized design techniques.
