The Service Mapping Specialist is responsible for correlating business services to the underlying infrastructure that enables them. This role transforms raw infrastructure data into a living service topology that supports visibility, impact analysis, and service-aware decision-making.
By executing disciplined top-down mapping, the Service Mapping Specialist ensures that services are understood in business terms, not just as collections of servers or applications.

Strategic Purpose
The Service Mapping Specialist operates at the intersection of infrastructure discovery and service intelligence. This role "lights up” the Service Data Fabric by connecting business service entry points to their true technical dependencies.
Accurate service maps enable impact-based prioritization, faster incident response, and meaningful service health measurement.

Key Responsibilities
Service Map Execution & Maintenance

• Configure and maintain ServiceNow Service Mapping using a top-down approach
• Visualize relationships between Business Services and underlying infrastructure
• Ensure maps remain accurate as environments change

Pattern Development & Discovery Enablement

• Develop custom Discovery patterns for proprietary or non-standard applications
• Troubleshoot probes and sensors to resolve discovery failures
• Extend discovery coverage beyond out-of-the-box capabilities

Traffic Analysis & Dependency Correlation

• Analyze traffic-based discovery data such as netstat and load balancer configurations
• Identify accurate dependency relationships and event correlation points
• Support reliable service impact analysis

Mapping Gap Remediation & Service Hygiene

• Identify and remediate gaps caused by credentials, firewalls, or ghost assets
• Eliminate incomplete or misleading service maps
• Support overall CMDB and service hygiene goals

Owner Validation & Operational Alignment

• Conduct validation sessions with Service Owners and technical teams
• Confirm maps reflect real operational dependencies
• Ensure the Service-Aware view aligns with business reality

Required Qualifications

• Extensive experience with ServiceNow Service Mapping and Discovery
• Strong understanding of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, load balancing, and VIPs
• Proven ability to develop and troubleshoot Discovery patterns
• Ability to translate technical dependencies into business service context

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience mapping complex or regulated enterprise environments
• Familiarity with CSDM-aligned service models
• Background in financial services or highly regulated industries
• ServiceNow certifications related to Discovery or Service Mapping

• Reduction in unmapped or partially mapped dependencies
• Improved incident impact analysis and service visibility
• Sustained trust in service maps as operational assets
