The Engineering organization is seeking an experienced Production Manufacturing Engineer with deep expertise in Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) to drive mechanical design optimization and supplier collaboration for aerospace applications. As part of the Integrated Systems Solutions organization, you will work within a cross-disciplinary team to architect, design, and implement scalable manufacturing processes and production systems for space-based and terrestrial product solutions.
Overview
The Senior Production Manufacturing Engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams, suppliers, and manufacturing partners to ensure products are manufactured efficiently, cost-effectively, and to the highest quality standards. This role emphasizes optimization of mechanical design and manufacturability for airframe components, mechanical assemblies, precision machined parts, and structural systems supporting aerospace platforms.
Core DFMA & Mechanical Design Responsibilities
-
Lead DFMA initiatives for mechanical components and assemblies including structural parts, brackets, housings, mechanisms, and precision machined components
-
Partner with mechanical design engineers and suppliers to optimize part geometry, tolerances, material selection, and assembly methods from concept through production
-
Conduct comprehensive design reviews to identify and resolve manufacturability risks in mechanical drawings, 3D models, GD&T callouts, and assembly sequences
-
Lead DFM/DFC reviews and provide sign-off for design release
-
Drive cost reduction through DFMA analysis, part consolidation, and supplier-driven value engineering
-
Collaborate with suppliers to optimize CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, composite layup, welding, and precision assembly processes
-
Ensure manufacturing architecture supports the full product lifecycle, from early design for manufacturability and cost optimization through rate production
Supplier Collaboration & Qualification
-
Lead supplier selection, qualification, and onboarding for mechanical components, raw materials, and subassemblies
-
Develop and implement supplier manufacturing processes, tooling strategies, and quality control procedures
-
Resolve dimensional non-conformances, assembly issues, and process capability challenges
-
Support supplier compliance with aerospace standards (AS9100, NADCAP, AWS D17.1)
-
Analyze production data to evaluate manufacturability, build-to-build variability, and continuous improvement opportunities
Primary Responsibilities
-
Develop and maintain manufacturing BOMs, routings in MES/ERP systems, and cycle time standards
-
Plan assembly line layouts for assembly, integration, and test at various production rates
-
Execute flight and non-flight build and test campaigns
-
Define material flow and manufacturing processes across multiple assembly levels
-
Implement statistical process control (SPC) and quality control standards
-
Specify, procure, network, and program production equipment and test systems (including PLC networking and common communication protocols)
-
Implement work order systems and automated documentation processes
-
Lead DFM/DFC reviews and support design release readiness
-
Analyze production optimization data and collaborate cross-functionally to improve manufacturability and consistency
-
Architect and validate a holistic manufacturing operations management system down to shop floor workflows
-
Prepare KPI reporting (OEE, capacity utilization, throughput, OTD, FPY) and communicate effectively with technical and operations stakeholders
-
Manage and close non-conformances, test anomalies, and production defects; perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions in high-rate production environments
Citizenship & Clearance Requirements
-
U.S. Citizenship required to comply with government-imposed requirements
-
Some roles require eligibility to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance
-
Certain roles require an active TS/SCI security clearance
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
-
Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Manufacturing, Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, or related discipline) or equivalent experience
-
8+ years of experience developing manufacturing systems for space hardware or automotive applications
-
8+ years of technical leadership experience standing up facilities and manufacturing operations
-
8+ years of demonstrated experience planning and scaling manufacturing operations
-
5+ years of experience developing and implementing operations control processes and tools documentation
