Strategies to Increase IT Employee Productivity

IT Employee Productivity

As an IT leader, it’s not your responsibility to maintain the status quo. Your job is instead to encourage and enable your team to work faster, smarter, and more efficiently so that they can ultimately accomplish more. This is a notoriously difficult goal, but with the right management strategy it can be achieved. Here are some tips to help you increase IT employee productivity:

Create Economic Incentives

This one may seem obvious, but the simple fact is that people will accomplish more if they can reap some personal benefit from that hard work. There are a number of ways to do this, and it’s important to keep your eye on cost effectiveness, but offering people a bonus/raise/reward has an appreciable effect on productivity and team morale.

Provide Meaningful Feedback

Some of the most biggest obstacles to productivity involve miscommunication, bureaucratic redundancies, and disengaged management. Providing your team with honest, direct, clear feedback that shows them what you expect, when you expect it, and how you expect them to get there can cut through a lot of this confusion.

Show Respect

You can’t expect anyone to give you more if you don’t respect them as a person. Time and experience have shown that IT teams will work harder for leaders they enjoy working for. Take the time to get to know your team as people, and be empathetic to the issues/events that all of us face outside of work that affect our performance inside of work.

Give Support

Your team may not be as productive as possible because they are understaffed, overworked, lacking a crucial piece of technology, in need of additional training, or simply trapped in a drab environment. Correcting these relatively minor issues and pledging to support your team as much as possible can have a major impact on productivity.

Lead by Example

Imagine how an employee feels when they see their boss taking a two-hour lunch, wasting time on the internet, or making constant trips to the water cooler. It’s both unrealistic and unfair to expect your team to get more done if you are not also willing to put in the time and work required.

Recognize Success

We already talked about economic incentives, but sometimes a simple pat on the back and expression of gratitude can have just as powerful an effect. If you want your team to start producing more, make sure you recognize that accomplishment when and if it arrives. Employees who feel recognized for their contribution will continue to turn in stellar work.

These strategies are designed to help you improve your existing IT team. But just as important is recruiting IT professionals who have the elusive combination of hard and soft skills to start productive and get even more productive.
