Universal Human Rights Month

Every December, we observe Universal Human Rights Month, a time to recognize the fundamental freedoms that belong to everyone, no matter their background, beliefs, or circumstances. It’s a moment to celebrate progress, reflect on ongoing challenges, and recommit to protecting the basic rights that make it possible for individuals and communities to thrive.

December 10^th is Human Rights Day, marking the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. This groundbreaking document set a global standard for equality, justice, and human dignity, inspiring decades of progress in human rights around the world. Because of this historic milestone, the entire month of December is dedicated to promoting and upholding these universal values.

This year’s Human Rights Day theme is “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials” to highlight the simple yet profound truth that human rights are not lofty ideals reserved for global diplomacy. They are the basic elements of daily life: access to safety, food, education, healthcare, freedom of expression, and the ability to live without discrimination or fear. These essentials shape our well-being, our opportunities, and our ability to participate in society.
