Earth Day

Earth Day is observed annually on April 22 to promote sustainability, environmental protection, and peace for humanity and nature alike. This event is celebrated globally to unite everyone in the mission to protect our planet and all the unique life that calls our Earth home.

Each year, a theme is chosen to help the world focus its mission and make the greatest impact. The official theme for Earth Day 2024 is Planet vs. Plastics. Plastics have become a hot issue because plastic waste and the pervasiveness of microplastics have a detrimental effect on both people and our ecosystems. The goal set forth with this year’s theme is to push for 60% reduction of plastic production by the year 2040.

Now, here’s how you can help. First, get educated about plastics and learn how you can make a difference when it comes to reducing plastic pollution. You can also sign the Global Plastics Treaty and tell Congress that you want the government to take action on plastic pollution.

Closer to home, take time to examine your own habits and reduce single-use plastic by choosing more environmentally friendly alternatives whenever possible. For example, instead of drinking bottled water from single-use bottles, getting a water filter and reusable bottles can reduce your reliance on plastic. Also, when you join the movement, don’t forget to spread the word! You can make an impact with each person you educate on plastic pollution.

You can take further action this Earth Day by attending a local event to clean up your community, reaching out to your city, county, and state representatives in support of stronger environmental protection laws, and simply appreciating the beauty of planet Earth by spending time outdoors. You can also check out these resources to learn more about what people, communities, and organizations around the world are doing to make planet Earth a priority – not just on Earth Day, but all year round.
