Hot Jobs: iOS Developer
Job Seekers
The iPhone and iPad are arguably the two most important pieces of technological hardware created in the last twenty years, and both rely on iOS to serve as their operating system. That is why iOS developers are in such high demand. Any company that wants to reach the tens of millions of customers that use and love Apple mobile products needs to have iOS experts in their workforce, and they are currently searching far and wide for them. Learn more about this in-demand career path, and decide if it’s where you want to put your IT expertise to use.
Job Responsibilities
The particular type of iOS development project that you work on will depend entirely on your employer, but there are some general responsibilities that carry through no matter where you are working.
- Design and build applications for the iOS platform
- Collaborate with other development staff to define, design, and distribute new products
- Test new products for usability, reliability, and security
- Work to improve application performance
- Integrate other technologies with the iOS platform
Educational Requirements
Employers will want any recruit applying to be an iOS developer to have a BS, and preferably an MS in computer science or engineering. Equally if not more important, however, is specific iOS experience. Successful applicants have typically published at least one of their own apps, worked with third-party libraries and APIs, and have extensive experience working with iOS frameworks. There are already dedicated degree programs that allow students to focus specifically on app development, and the quality and ubiquity of these programs is expected to expand rapidly in the near future.
Job Outlook
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for Software Developers, a category that broadly includes iOS developers, is expected to increase significantly in coming years. The number of job opportunities is forecasted to grow by 22% by 2022, which is considered much faster than average. Median pay currently stands at $93,350. Given the rapid evolution/adoption of mobile technologies, and the dominance of iOS, its entirely possible that the demand and compensation for developers will grow faster than the numbers stated above.
