Because of the pressures to always grow and advance, many tech employees unfortunately overextend themselves in the workplace and struggle to say “no” to their bosses and colleagues.
While it can be beneficial for your career to take on new challenges, it’s important to set boundaries so you maintain your best performance and avoid burnout. Many individuals fall into the trap of immediately agreeing to every single request asked of them – often leading to major anxiety and stress on the job! Next time you’re faced with a potential new project or endeavor, here are some key steps to take:
Assess the opportunity.
Before responding to the opportunity presented to you, take a few moments to fully assess it. This means gathering all the necessary information, such as what the project will entail and its deadline. It’s also important to think about whether the opportunity falls within the scope of your work and if it will benefit your career in any way. For example, will there be a mentor available to guide you? Will you learn a valuable new skill? Being able to answer these types of questions will help you evaluate whether the opportunity is a worthwhile investment of your time and how impactful it will be on your professional success.
Be assertive and direct.
If you know right away that a new task or project is going to overwhelm you, be honest with yourself and the person making the request. This means explaining why you’re declining the opportunity. Do you have too much on your plate? Do you lack the necessary skills? Whatever your reason, it’s imperative you provide a clear explanation. This is so the individual understands your perspective and does not ask for a similar request in the future!
Be confident in your decision.
