What Makes a Great Tech Leader?

Career Advice, Job Seekers

IT Leadership Qualities

Pursuing a career in IT? There are many essential traits you’ll need in order to become a respected leader within the IT industry. With many changes constantly taking shape in the tech world, it’s important you’re aware of the heavy demands and expectations you will be expected to meet. Here are three traits that make a successful tech leader:

Self-awareness. The ability to understand exactly who you are is critical for being an effective tech leader. This means understanding your own strengths, as well as your limitations and weaknesses. Knowing the areas where you excel will allow you to capitalize on your strengths, while knowing your weaknesses enables you to seek the right people and resources to get things done. With the IT field often breeding stressful work environments, developing a strong sense of self-awareness will allow you to successfully manage your communication with others in the workplace.

Thirst for knowledge. It’s nearly impossible to be a successful tech leader without a hunger for knowledge. As the tech industry continues to evolve, IT leaders must always stay informed of current trends and educate themselves on new developments in the field. Whether it’s a commitment to learning new business skills or technical skills, IT leaders must always be focused on new ways to solve problems, overcome barriers and manage risk. By remaining committed to personal and professional development, you’ll have the knowledge and tools to confidently lead a team.

Strategic thinker. As an IT leader, you’ll be tasked with finding technology solutions for a variety of problems. It’s important you have a strategic mindset and always aim to understand the needs of your employees, clients and/or customers. Strategic thinking also involves monitoring your competition and the current marketplace to determine how you can most effectively innovate and reshape the vision and objectives for your organization.

If you truly want to succeed as an IT leader, you’ll need strong determination and dedication to the field.  With the right combination of skills, grit and passion, you’ll be well on your way to becoming an established industry leader.
