Hispanic Heritage Month

This observance takes place each year from September 15th through October 15th to recognize the important achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans throughout history. This year’s theme is Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America.

National Hispanic American Heritage Month began as Hispanic Heritage Week and was later expanded to cover a 30-day period in 1988 that encompasses several significant dates. According to the government website, “September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.”

This month is meant to encourage everyone to embrace and explore the impact of Hispanic cultures throughout our nation’s history, as well as today. Many Americans have roots in these countries and feel a close kinship with their cultures. It is important for Americans to remember their roots as a nation of immigrants, and to keep in mind that there is strength in our diversity.
