National Hispanic American Heritage Month

National Hispanic American Heritage Month takes place each year from September 15th through October 15th to recognize the important achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans throughout history. This year’s theme is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.”

This observance began as Hispanic Heritage Week and was later expanded in 1988 to cover a 30-day period that encompasses several significant dates.

According to hispanicheritagemonth.gov, September 15th is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on September 16th and September 18th, respectively. Columbus Day or Día de la Raza also falls during this period, on October 12th.

This month encourages us to embrace and explore the impact of Hispanic cultures throughout our nation’s history, as well as today. Many Americans have roots in these countries and feel a close kinship with their cultures. It’s important for Americans to remember their roots as a nation of immigrants, and to keep in mind that there is strength in our diversity.
